Rural Life

The Diocese of Green Bay's Rural Life Committee meets the pastoral needs of families in rural areas by:

  • planning an annual Rural Life Day celebration
  • performing legislative advocacy on rural issues
  • advocating for needs of parishioners in rural areas in diocesan planning
  • working closely with the National Catholic Rural Life Conference.

RuralLifeLogo All are invited to celebrate and support Rural Life 2018 in the Diocese of Green Bay at one of the two celebrations. Rural Life Day is an opportunity to:
  • praise God's abundant generosity
  • have your soil, seeds, animals and machinery blessed
  • build community throughout the Diocese's rural communities

Collections taken at Masses go to scholarships for students pursuing a degree in a field supporting rural life.

NE Wisconsin Native and Broadcaster Pam Jahnke to Speak at Luncheon

Pam JahnkePam Jahnke Northeastern Wisconsin native Pam Jahnke will be the luncheon speaker. Jahnke learned the farm work ethic growing up on her family's 200-acre dairy farm. She was active in 4-H and FFA, serving as a 4-H camp counselor, a dairy exhibitor in county fairs, and Oconto County's Dairy Queen.

Jahnke studied broadcast journalism and agriculture at UW-River Falls. In October of 1990, Jahnke became farm director in Madison and grew her farm broadcast from a single station in Madison to today's statewide 23-radio station WI Farm Report Network, plus daily reports on Madison's CBS affiliate WISC-TV.

In 2010 she was named president of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting and the Farm Broadcaster of the Year in 2013.

2018 Rural Life Essay and Drawing Contest

Students in grades 1-3, 4-5, and 6-8 will be invited to write an essay or draw a picture on a theme to be announced later. Winning entrants will receive a Culver's gift card and their entries will be published in the Rural Life Issue of The Compass.

Elizabeth Bekkers, a member of St. James Parish in Cooperstown, received the scholarship check from Jim Wavrunek of the Rural Life Committee May 24, 2017, at the Denmark High School awards ceremony.

Derek Schmidt, a member of Holy Family Parish in Brillion, received the scholarship check from Greg Bohman of the Rural Life Committee May 24, 2017, at the Brillion High School awards ceremony.
