GREEN BAY, Wis. (Feb. 11, 2021) – As more families face eviction in the new year, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay joins with its national organization, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), and the Felician Sisters of North America to make available emergency funds. Thanks to the recent creation of the “Francis Fund for Eviction Prevention,” Catholic Charities has been awarded $10,000 to be distributed locally to those who are in extreme danger of losing their homes or in need of emergency rental assistance.
“As the pandemic continues and the weather becomes bitterer, many people are living on the brink of homelessness, and they are terrified,” said Karmen Lemke, director of Catholic Charities. “The Felician Sisters, founded in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and clearly walking in the footsteps of the saint, joined CCUSA to initiate this emergency fund at a moment when people are increasingly desperate. We are grateful to receive dollars locally to help those in need.”
In these uncertain times, we know that many families are suffering the burden of unemployment and food insecurity. It is unconscionable that they should also face the fear of losing their homes. Thanks to generous donors and partners like CCUSA, Catholic Charities has the resources and expertise to get help into the hands of those in need.
We know the needs are great. But according to a recent study, the counties in Wisconsin reporting the highest rates of foreclosures are Langlade, Oconto, Manitowoc, and Marinette. Due to the significant need in those counties, that is where the grant is being applied.
